Art Diary

An art diary is a daily journal kept by artists, often containing both words and sketches, and occasionally including multimedia elements such as collages. Such books will frequently contain rough workings, in cartoon form, of ideas later to appear in finished works, as well as acting as a normal diary, by allowing the artist to record their day-to-day activities and emotions.
These diaries not only give art historians a valuable opportunity to explore the creation process of these finished works, but they are a useful biographical tool. Many famous artists are known for their art diaries - the sketchbooks of Leonardo da Vinci are probably the best known example.

X Drawing

Joachim Homann wrote: The history of modern art has been told as a search for the unknown masterpiece, the ultimate artistic achievement, which never materializes. The agonizing modern artist can only describe that ideal through his or her continuous failure of its articulation. Negativity, then, is the only legitimate expression. With his work image not available John Dunn refuses to deliver an image, which he would always find unsatisfactory, and replaces it with an ongoing internet-blog. This is a text- and image-based online diary that allows visitors to participate with comments. Dunn’s meandering meditations reflect on the role of images in a culture obsessed with artistic authenticity. Creating an interactive experience for artist and viewer, Dunn suggests that an image’s meaning is always a co-production.

This image (like the empty chair) suggests something similar to "Image not Available" by virtue of the absence of the subject. I photographed hands earlier.

Photographic Memory

I have been looking over the photos I have posted since I began this blog. I realized that many of them hold a memory for me. Memory of the location, time of day, thought, experience, and so forth.

I have never been fond of "family photos." And in the past, when I have been on vacation, I have deliberately not taken a camera along. I felt that the camera became a substitute for the real experience at hand.

I have not taken a vacation for a long time.

New Cell Phone (with camera)

I took this photo with a cell phone I was checking out at the Verizon Store. I had been thinking that I wanted a higher resolution camera than the one in my current phone. This one is quite nice.

So, what does this mean? I want to continue taking pictures with a cell phone, because it continues to be "uncharged" as an image making activity. But I am also thinking that I may want to print out the photos on my inkjet printer--so I can look at them, and maybe hang a few on the wall. That is why I am looking for higher resolution images. In any case I love electronic gadgets.

The image above is attractive to me. It was difficult to shoot, because the cell phone was secured with a short cable. Typically, I would not have taken a shot of this subject, containing black and red. The small amount of yellow in the cable is gorgeous.
