Joachim Homann wrote: The history of modern art has been told as a search for the unknown masterpiece, the ultimate artistic achievement, which never materializes. The agonizing modern artist can only describe that ideal through his or her continuous failure of its articulation. Negativity, then, is the only legitimate expression. With his work image not available John Dunn refuses to deliver an image, which he would always find unsatisfactory, and replaces it with an ongoing internet-blog. This is a text- and image-based online diary that allows visitors to participate with comments. Dunn’s meandering meditations reflect on the role of images in a culture obsessed with artistic authenticity. Creating an interactive experience for artist and viewer, Dunn suggests that an image’s meaning is always a co-production. |
